THE ROYAL BURGH OF INVERKEITHING PIPE BAND
CHILD PROTECTION POLICY
The Royal Burgh of Inverkeithing Pipe Band is fully committed to safeguarding the welfare of all
children and young people whilst they are members of our band. It recognises its responsibility to
take all reasonable steps to promote safe practice and in order to achieve this we will ensure that
our volunteer tutors are carefully selected, screened, trained and supervised.
All children regardless of age, culture, disability, gender, sexuality or religion have equal rights to
protection from harm, abuse or exploitation and The Royal Burgh of Inverkeithing Pipe Band
acknowledges that the welfare of children and young people is paramount.
Under the Protection of Children (Scotland) Act (POCSA) 2003, we are under a legal obligation to:
-
Not knowingly appoint an individual to a childcare position who is fully listed as an
offender.
-
Remove an individual from a childcare position who is fully listed.
-
Refer an individual to the Disqualified from Working with Children List (DWCL) if grounds
exist
SCOPE
This Policy applies to all Ordinary and Temporary Members of The Royal Burgh of Inverkeithing
Pipe Band. A child is defined as a person under the age of 18.
GOOD PRACTICE
All adults associated with The Royal Burgh of Inverkeithing Pipe Band should be encouraged to
demonstrate exemplary behaviour in order to protect themselves from false allegations. The
following are common sense examples of how to create a positive culture and climate.
-
Always work in an open environment. Avoid private or unobserved situations and
encourage open communication.
-
Treat all children and young people with respect and dignity.
-
Always put the welfare of each young person first.
-
Give enthusiastic and constructive feedback rather than negative criticism.
-
Secure parental consent in writing to act in loco parentis, if the need arises to
administer emergency first aid and/or other medical treatment.
-
Secure parental consent in writing for the child or young person to be included in any band
photographs or other publicity material.
-
Keep a written record of any injury that occurs, along with the details of any treatment
given.
-
Request written parental consent if band members are required to transport
children in their cars.
The following practices should be avoided except in emergencies.
-
Spending excessive amounts of time alone with children away from others.
-
Taking or dropping off a child to an event or rehearsal.
If health issues arise while a young person is participating during tuition or in a Pipe Band event,
the Pipe Band is responsible for initiating the proper care. If medical attention or hospital care is
needed, the young person’s own parents/carers must be contacted to inform them of the situation
as soon as possible.
