Wilma Graham - Pipe Major
I started chanter lessons at the age of 9 at the Inverkeithing and
District pipe band. In 1992, I went to play with Lochgelly High School
pipe band where, over the years, we won numerous championships including
champion of champions 2 years in a row.
During this time I was also successful on the solo circuit and was also Fife Champion for my age group.
In
1996, I had my first stint in Dysart and Dundonald pipe band under the
leadership of Davy Barnes. Unfortunately, Davy left just before the
start of the season so I took a year out to concentrate on other musical
activities one of which included my RSPBA examinations.
In
1997, I moved to Boghall and Bathgate pipe band under the leadership
of, Eric Jones. Whilst in Boghall, I was invited to play in the kitchen
piping at Bathgate's solos and did this 2 years in a row.
Due to
university commitments I left Boghall and went back to Dysart and
Dundonald pipe band under Brian Lamond and played with the band for a
few years. At this time, I also was the Pipe Major for Inverkeithing
High School pipe band. During these years, I was invited to be an
instructor on the RSPBA summer school and also ram piping classes in
Edinburgh on behalf of the piping centre.
In 2001, I moved to play with the City of Edinburgh pipe band under, Derek Graham, where we were successful in grade 2.
In
2006, I took time out from pipe bands to concentrate on teaching. I've
put numerous pupils through school standard grade and higher exams. I've
also helped them pass their RSPBA exams. All passed with credit grades.
I have a BA in music and business where my principle instrument was
bagpipes so was well aware of the work required by pupils.
Finally,
in 2010, I joined Royal Burgh of Inverkeithing to assist with teaching
the band. However, I took over as pipe major at the end of 2010 and have
been building the band up so we were able to compete last year.
